HS 0922 + 1333 : another low accretion rate polar with a pronounced cyclotron line spectrum ?

چکیده
We present time resolved spectroscopy of the newly discovered magnetic CV HS 0922+1333. Our observations show that it has a period of 244±2 min. Its optical spectra are dominated by a strong single spot cyclotron line at 5334Å. A detailed analysis shows that further cyclotron harmonics are at 7800Å (hidden by the M dwarf companion) and at 4034Å which yields a field strength of 66 MG (n = 2, 3 and 4). A much weaker spot appears to be present at antiphase with B 81 MG (n = 2 and 3 visible). HS 0922+1333 does not show any emission lines (like Balmer, HeII) except the cyclotron harmonics. It has an extremely low accretion rate of the order of 3 · 10 −13 M yr −1 , atypical for its long period. It has not been detected by ROSAT. HS 0922+1333 is the third member of a class of strong cylotron line emitters (low accretion rates) defined by HS 1023+3900 and 1RXS J012851.9−233933, both probably in the CV period gap, while HS 0922+1333 is clearly above the period gap. At a distance of 190 pc the WD primary is rather faint (M B = 12.6) and cool (T eff ≤ 10 000 K) implying the system is old.

HS 1023 + 3900 – a magnetic CV in the period gap with a distinct cyclotron emission line spectrum ?
We report on the discovery by the Hamburg Quasar Survey of a magnetic CV with a pure cyclotron emission line spectrum. With a photometric and spectroscopic period of 167.6 min it is located in the CV period gap. From 91 spectra taken over 1.2 orbital periods we identify the n = 2 and 3 cyclotron harmonics of the main accretion pole with 60 MG as well as the n = 2 and 3 modes of the secondary po...
متن کاملZeeman lines and a single cyclotron line in the low - accretion rate polar 1 RXS J 012851 . 9 – 233931 ( RBS 0206 ) ?
We present a low-resolution discovery spectrum and CCD-photometry of the bright X-ray source 1RXS J012851.9– 233931 found in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. These first observations suggest that the source is an AM Herculis star (polar) accreting at a low rate. The optical spectrum is dominated by Zeeman absorption features from the white dwarf, indicating a mean photospheric magnetic field of 36 ± 1...
متن کاملRXJ 2115 . 7 – 5840 : a short - period , asynchronous polar ⋆
We report phase-resolved optical polarimetric, photometric and spectroscopic observations of RXJ2115.7–5840 (= EUVE J2115–58.6, Craig 1996) which confirms the system to be a magnetic cataclysmic binary of the polar (AM Herculis) subclass. The optical light curve is sometimes flat and occasionally displays a pronounced bright phase, reminiscent of the self-eclipse of a small accretion spot by th...
متن کاملAn in-depth study of the pre-polar candidate WX LMi
Optical photometry, spectroscopy and XMM-Newton ultraviolet and X-ray observations with full phase coverage are used for an in-depth study of WX LMi, a system formerly termed as a low-accretion rate polar. We find a constant low mass accretion rate, Ṁ ∼ 1.5 × 10M⊙ yr, a peculiar accretion geometry with one spot not being accessible via Roche-lobe overflow, a low temperature of the white dwarf, ...
متن کاملUnravelling the Puzzle of the Eclipsing Polar Sdssj 015543.40+002807.2 with Xmm and Optical Photometry/spectropolarimetry
The cataclysmic variable SDSSJ 015543.40+002807.2 is confirmed to be a magnetic system of the AM Herculis type. With an orbital period of 87.13 minutes, it is also the shortest-period eclipsing Polar known. Monitoring with XMM-Newton finds a high-state light curve dominated by a single X-ray emitting accretion pole located slightly prograde of the secondary star. The hard X-ray spectrum is typi...
